LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Speed Art Museum was awarded a $1.2 million grant from the Art Bridge Foundation, part of which will help the museum expand upon its free general admission promotion on Sundays.

Seven years ago, the Owsley Brown II Family and Brown-Forman Foundation provided a gift to allow free admission on Sundays. According to a news release, the additional grant will expand Sunday programming like film screenings and Community Day, through 2026.

"The timing and gift of this grant is so very important," Raphaela Platow, director of the Speed Art Museum, said in a news release Wednesday. "With construction now underway for our new free community art park, slated to open in late 2025, the continuation of free general admission on Sundays, and now First Thursday, allows us to further our mission to welcome all members of our community to experience the power art has to heal and inspire."

The grant also allows free admission to the Speed Art Museum's First Thursdays program. It takes place on the first Thursday of every month from 5-8 p.m. It's designed for working families and offers live figure costume drawing, musical performances, family art making and free films.
