SELLERSBURG, Ind. (WDRB) -- Speed limit signs on I-265 in southern Indiana have been increased from 55 mph to 65 mph.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) made the changes to the signs on Thursday between the East End Bridge to just before the I-64 interchange.
Sgt. Carey Huls with Indiana State Police says he doesn't want drivers to be caught off guard.
"Our main goal, naturally, is just to keep the roads safe," Huls said.
That means having extra patrols on the interstate for the time being and making sure drivers are abiding by the law by not driving an extra few miles per hour over the limit.
"There is no extra. Our view is we're going to strictly enforce the speed limit," Huls said. "There's that common myth out there among some drivers that if the speed limit is this, there's about 10 mph over that I can safely do and that's simply not the case."
For drivers who use the interstate every day, the change is welcome.
"It can definitely help cutting the commute down and stuff but just gotta make sure you're being safe on the road still," said Indiana driver Sean Moses.
A portion of I-65 in southern Indiana will also see a speed increase. That change has not been made yet.
The overall increase in speed limit is meant to improve the flow of traffic as interstate designs have improved. It also provides a less abrupt change in speed on certain roads.
"A lot more gradual over the course of several miles and not all at once," said INDOT Communications Director Scott Manning.
And state police will be watching.
"With the speed increase we're going to be watching even more closely," Huls said.
The speed increase on I-65 will come in the next couple of weeks, but no date has been set. That change-over could last two days because there are more signs that need to be updated.
