LOUISVILLE, Ky., (WDRB) -- A man in custody facing strangulation and domestic abuse charges fled a Louisville courtroom Wednesday and ran down escalators toward the exit before deputies took him to the ground, according to an arrest citation and video of the incident.

Wisam Khalil was brought from Metro Corrections to a holdover area in Jefferson district court and was talking to his attorney about his domestic violence case when he bolted through a door into the courtroom, according to the arrest report.

As he ran through the courtroom into the hallway and down the escalator, Khalil ignored orders to stop and refused to comply with commands until deputies took him down in the lobby, the report claims.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Lt. Col. Carl Yates said no one was injured during the incident.

Yates said attorneys aren't typically allowed in the holdover area, where Khalil was waiting to appear before a judge.

When the attorney asked to speak quickly with Khalil before his hearing, Yates said Khalil caught the court door as it was closing and ran past his attorney and a deputy.

Now, Khalil is facing charges of fleeing or evading police, resisting arrest and escape.

He was arraigned Thursday morning, and a $5,000 bond was set.

Khalil, 34, was already in custody for violating the conditions of his release in his strangulation case.

He was originally charged in November with strangulation, assault, burglary, unlawful imprisonment and criminal mischief. His bond was set at $5,000 cash with home incarceration if posted.

Prosecutors were trying to revoke his home incarceration after he was accused of violating an emergency protective order and charged with threatening the victim multiple times, telling her he was going to kill her, according to an arrest report.
