LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Sgt. Charles Whittaker got a special birthday surprise Wednesday when a motorcade showed up to help him celebrate turning 100.

Whittaker, a World War II veteran, served in the U.S. Army in several locations throughout the Pacific.

The motorcade picked him up from his home and took him to the Clark County Casting and Conservation Club, where family, friends and members of the community were waiting.

The celebration brought together several groups and community members who wanted to recognize Whittaker and wish him a happy birthday.

Whittaker said he expected some people to come, but he wasn't expecting the turnout he saw.

"I knew there would be a few here, but I didn't realize that it was going to be like this," Whittaker said. "And I really appreciate it."

He said the celebration was a little overwhelming, but he was grateful for everyone who came out.

"I hope I can do it next year," he said.

As for his secret to reaching 100, Whittaker said he "doesn't have one."
