Gov. Mike DeWine says he believes Ohio should abolish the death penalty. The term-limited governor, who has repeatedly postponed scheduled executions, said Tuesday that data shows the death penalty is not serving as a deterrent to violent crime as the law he helped write had intended. DeWine has repeatedly extended Ohio’s unofficial death penalty moratorium during his two four-year terms, citing pharmaceutical suppliers’ unwillingness to provide the drugs used in lethal injections. The Republican previously said he expected no further executions during his governorship, which runs through 2026. Ohio last put an inmate to death in July 2018.
