LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky lawmakers advanced two measures aimed at strengthening protections for children from sexual abuse, sending both bills to the governor’s desk.

House Bill 253 would require employers to conduct background and reference checks on prospective employees.

It also mandates training focused on identifying and preventing sexual misconduct and grooming behavior.

House Bill 4 creates a criminal offense for grooming a minor. Under the measure, grooming would be a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail. The charge would rise to a felony if the child involved is younger than 12.

Supporters say the legislation is intended to close gaps in existing law and provide stronger safeguards for children across the state.

Both bills now await action from the governor.
