Over the weekend, we lost a giant in horseracing with the passing of D. Wayne Lukas. Mr. Lukas trained winners of seven Preakness Stakes, four Belmont Stakes, four Kentucky Derbies, four Kentucky Oaks and 20 Breeders’ Cup races. I admired him, I suppose, because he had a great work ethic, his standards were high, and that combination produced results. I will truly miss seeing him on the backside during Kentucky Derby week.

Over this same past weekend, we honored one of, if not THE finest athletic directors in the country when a section of Floyd Street was renamed Tom Jurich Way. I admire Tom Jurich too because he knew what he wanted and how to achieve it. He attracted winners, he gave them the tools they needed to win and then held them to very high standards. If a coach left, he had three more lined up who wanted to come work with him. U of L simply would not be in the ACC were it not for Tom Jurich. I salute Josh Heird and Mayor Craig Greenberg for making Tom Jurich Way happen.

D. Wayne Lukas and Tom Jurich, legends both, proved that success follows excellence.
