A city inspector this week ordered emergency demolition at a former church on Broadway damaged in a fire last October.

Preservationists argue the property at Barret Avenue and East Breckinridge Street has historic value that includes landscaping that has warranted protection in other high-profile cases.

Neighbors and preservation advocates sought landmarks status for the pedestrian-only court in the city's Meriwether neighborhood slated for demolition. 

A WDRB News investigation found that the city's landmarks commission is the only board listed in Metro ordinances that requires a majority vote of the overall membership for certain actions.

An effort to grant landmark status to Lawton Court in the Meriwether neighborhood failed despite getting a majority of votes at a January meeting of Louisville's landmarks commission.
