The deadline looms as Kentucky experiences a backlog to get a Real ID.

As the federal REAL ID enforcement deadline approaches, Kentucky lawmakers are urging a delay, citing long lines and overwhelmed driver’s license facilities across the state.

Currently, just 36.3% of Kentuckians eligible for a driver's license have a Real ID, the state says.

Starting May 7, 2025, travelers will need a REAL ID to board domestic flights, marking the end of a years-long extension of the deadline.
