The six-acre parcel of land is owned by the Glen Oaks Country Club, which is not affiliated with the Glen Oaks neighborhood, and sits adjacent to the 14th hole of the course and Interstate-71.

On May 14, 1963, the Louisville Board of Aldermen passed an ordinance de-segregating Louisville.
The recipients are all members of the Montford Point Marines. They received the award not only because of their service to the country but also because of the racial challenges they faced and overcame more than 70 years ago.
