LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Sometimes, you just get lucky.
Two weeks ago, I was confident about my college football picks against the spread and I went bust on all five selections. The platinum sombrero.
Last week, I wavered on Louisville covering 10 points against Georgia Tech and wondered if Indiana would suffer a letdown against Charlotte. Who knew North Carolina State and Mississippi State would actually be more dreadful than I imagined?
Somehow, I followed an 0-5 with a 5-0 — and battled back to .500 on the season after four weeks of picking college football games against the spread with Eric Crawford.
I'll take another 5-0 this week. But I'll settle for 3-2. And lie in fear of another 0-5.
Here goes:
Wagering recap:
Crawford: 2-3 last week but won $75 because he bet $150 on Indiana to cover against Charlotte. For the season, 11-9, bankroll $1,225 (after starting with $1,000).
Bozich: 5-0 last week, won $170. For the season, 10-10, bankroll $970 (after starting with $1,000).
Week Five Games:
1. Louisville (+6.5) at Notre Dame, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
Crawford: I'll take Notre Dame to cover at home against Louisville. More than playing at home, I think the Irish are healthier than Louisville and may give the Cardinals problems with their talented secondary. ($25)
Bozich: I'll give the points and roll with the Irish for $30, who have been a strange team to understand this season.
Nothing complicated about the reason: ND is at home for their annual "Green Out" game. Marcus Freeman and his 3-1 team cannot afford another burp if the Irish plan to remain in consideration for the national playoff. They'll be motivated to avenge last season's loss, too. And they've only allowed one rushing touchdown this season.
2. Kentucky (+17.5) at Mississippi, Saturday, noon.
Crawford: Ole Miss is not a good matchup for Kentucky. That's a lot of points to give, though. I like the Rebels' chances to dictate tempo at home in this one, and cover the 17.5. ($25)
Bozich: I'll take the points and UK for $30. The Wildcats have been solid, especially on defense outside of the South Carolina fiasco. According to Jeff Sagarin's numbers, Ole Miss has played the easiest schedule in the Southeastern Conference. The Rebels will win but not by more than two touchdowns and a field goal.
3. Maryland (+7) at Indiana, Saturday, noon.,
Crawford: I'll take Indiana and give the points against Maryland. I think this is a big "prove it" game, especially being at home, and the Hoosiers seem to be rising to occasions under Curt Cignetti. ($25)
Bozich: Rain is likely in Bloomington Saturday, which clouds the forecast for this one. It will be the first substantial test of how much better the Hoosiers are under Curt Cignetti because the Terps have averaged 40 points per game while winning their last three against the Hoosiers. I think the Cignetti Factor is legit: I'll give the points and take Cignetti for $50.
4. Western Kentucky (+13) at Boston College, Saturday, noon.
Crawford: Boston College is tough, and I don't have a good feel for WKU yet. Give me the Eagles at home, even giving the Hilltoppers 13. ($25)
Bozich: Give me the points and the Toppers for $25. WKU impressed me with its comeback win over a good Toledo team last weekend. After playing back-to-back games against Missouri and Michigan State, BC is primed for a letdown against an opponent without the power conference hype.
5. Georgia (-2) at Alabama, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
Crawford: I feel like Georgia is sitting on a big performance coming out of the bye week. And even if not, the Bulldogs should be able to cover the two points at Alabama. ($25)
Bozich: Alabama getting points in Bryant-Denny Stadium? Yes please. The primary reason that is happening is because Nick Saban is no longer the coach.
I don't care if this is Kalen DeBoer's introduction to SEC football. Bama has scored 13 rushing touchdowns this season. Georgia has not allowed any. Bama QB Jalen Milroe will have to stand and deliver — and I believe that he will. Give me Bama for $25.
