LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Trinity grad David Johnson, fresh off his appearances in The Basketball Tournament, spent Saturday at his old stomping grounds for his third annual "Camp DJ" at Steinhauser Gym.
The former UofL guard worked with local kids on a wide range of skills, while also teaching the importance of teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship.
"It's a blessing for me to know the community trusts me enough to show up and give me the opportunity to host this," Johnson said. "Especially in this building where I played high school basketball. I always want to come back and show love. I have some (current) Trinity basketball players helping as well just to keep that connection and culture going."
As a kid, Johnson said he attended camps of his role models and wants to inspire the next generation of basketball players from the area.
"I just wanted it to be a fun day (for the kids)," Johnson said. "Some of my best memories are from basketball camps. You meet a lot of people. A lot of these kids don't know each other, so they might meet a friend or talk about it in 10 years and say, 'Hey, we went to Camp DJ together.'"
Despite dealing with an illness earlier this week, Johnson made sure he was 100% for the camp.Â
He leaves for his second season of professional ball in Australia in early August.
