LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- This looks like one of the best weekends on the college football card.
Louisville needs to plant its cleats and make a stand at Virginia. Kentucky welcomes a Vanderbilt team that is the talk of the country.
Ohio State and Oregon gather for a statement game. So do Penn State and USC. And Oklahoma and Texas bring the Red River Rivalry into the Southeastern Conference.
Eric Crawford and I have stayed on the plus side of .500 while making picks and wagering imaginary money against the spread over the first six weeks of the season. Let's see if we can make it seven.
Wagering Recap:
Crawford went 3-2 last week to improve to 16-14 for the season. He also won $125 to bump his bankroll to $1,350, after starting with an imaginary $1,000.
Bozich 4-1, missing on Northwestern while taking the points against Indiana. I'm 19-11 on the season. But I only won $100, improving my bankroll to $1,230.
Games This Week:
1. Louisville (-7) at Virginia, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
Crawford: Louisville has defensive issues to work out against a pretty solid offensive team that is coming off a quality win over Boston College. I think Louisville finds a way to win, but I can't give the seven points. (pick – Virginia for $25)
Bozich: Never mind the Cavaliers' 4-1 record. Tony Elliott's team has the third-worst pass defense in the ACC, allowing more than 266 yards per game. Losing to SMU should motivate the Cards and Virginia won't have an answer for Tyler Shough and Ja'Corey Brooks. I'll take Louisville for $30.
2. Vanderbilt (+13.5) at Kentucky, Saturday, 7:45 p.m.
Crawford: Vanderbilt has had a lot of success running on early downs, chewing up clock, and putting pressure on opposing offenses that way. Kentucky's defense is built to stop that, specifically. I think it will be a low-scoring game that Kentucky wins. But I don't feel like they'll get the two-touchdown margin to cover. (pick – Vanderbilt for $50).
Bozich: They're still celebrating in Nashville. And people have forgotten Vandy lost to Georgia State. Kentucky should be primed following an off week. Vanderbilt should be trolling Alabama. I'll take UK for $25.
3. Ohio State (-3) at Oregon, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
Crawford: Ohio State has been blowing everybody away, but they're entering a supercharged atmosphere in Eugene for the first Big Ten meeting between the teams, both top 3 in the country. Of the two, I think the Buckeyes are the more likely to create some distance in terms of margin, so I'll take them for the win – but won't bet the house. (pick – Ohio State $25)
Bozich: Autzen Stadium is one of the most difficult venues for an opposing team, and the Ducks have rallied after two lackluster wins to start the season. But this is Ryan Day's most talented all-around team and the Buckeyes know they need this one to win the Big Ten. OSU for $25.
4. Penn State (-5) at USC, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
Crawford: Wasn't sure which way to go with this one, so I took at look at the PennLive website, which covers Penn State. Three of their four writers are picking USC to win straight up, which is good enough for me. (pick – USC for $25)
Bozich: Indiana is the only Big Ten team to travel across the country (in either direction) and win this season. James Franklin is no Curt Cignetti. Google him. USC for $25.
5. Texas (-14) vs. Oklahoma, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
Crawford: I think Texas has it going, and I'm not sure if it plays its game that Oklahoma has enough to stop the Longhorns, even if it plays well. (pick – Texas for $100)
Bozich: That's a lot of points for a rivalry game at a neutral site. A lot. But the Longhorns have routed everybody they have played this season and the Sooners don't have the quarterback to match either Quinn Ewers or Arch Manning. Texas for $50.
