Stanquon Clark

Louisville linebacker Stanquon Clark awaits a snap in the Cardinals win over Austion Peay on Auguts 31, 2024, in L&N Stadium.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A year ago, Louisville ended its first football season with four games in which a ton was on the line.

First came a win at Miami, which gave the Cardinals a berth in the ACC championship game. Then came the annual rivalry game against Kentucky and a heart-breaker in the ACC title game against Florida State. From there, a trip to the Holiday Bowl where a star was born, but not for Louisville. That was USC quarterback, Miller Moss.

The start to the 2024 season has been just the opposite for the Cardinals. It has been a no-drama kind of start with lopsided wins over FCS Austin Peay and Jacksonville State. Louisville is No. 3 in the nation in scoring and No. 4 in total offense without really having to rev its engines.

Brohm and his players will have to get on the gas Saturday, when Georgia Tech visits L&N Stadium to play its fifth game of the season. Louisville is playing only its third.

The Yellowjackets began the season with an upset that shocked the college football world, knocking off Florida State in Ireland. But after two more losses by the Seminoles, that victory has lost some of its luster. A win over No. 19 Louisville would bring some back for Georgia Tech, whose only loss came two weeks ago at Syracuse.

Louisville, meanwhile, not only will have to adapt to much stiffer competition but will have to work off any rust from an early bye week. With a meeting against nationally ranked Notre Dame coming next week, it’s a pivotal spot for the Cardinals.

A look at the matchup:

Georgia Tech is 3-1, with the big win coming against Florida State on a game-winning field goal in its opener. It also scored lopsided wins over Georgia State and VMI. It is coming off a 31-28 loss at Syracuse.

Haynes King

Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King looks to avoid the rush in a loss to Louisville to open the 2023 season.

Georgia Tech Player to Watch: Quarterback Haynes King Hit on 19 of 32 passes for 331 yards and three touchdowns against the Cardinals a year ago, while also carrying 10 times for 53 yards. He’s only become a more dangerous, seasoned player in the season since. After completing 17-22 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns in just one half of action last Saturday versus VMI, King ranks fifth nationally in completion percentage at .764 through four games (81-106). He’s protected by an offensive line that has yet to allow a sack this season.

Louisville Player to Watch: Cardinal linebacker Stanquon Clark gets more active with each passing game. The sophomore has been the leading tackler for the Cardinals through two games, with 11 tackles, and his ball pursuit has helped lead a defense which has not allowed a first-drive score in 20 straight games and ranks in the top 10 nationally in points allowed, yards allowed and passing defense.

Quote: Louisville coach Jeff Brohm, asked about the challenge of a team playing in its fifth game, when his team will be playing only its third.

“They’re battle tested, without question. They’ve proven that they can play some good football, so I give the credit where credit is due. They’ve done a really good job. The one game they lost, they lost by three points, on the road, against a good opponent. So, this is a good football team and you can tell by watching on video, looking at their win-loss record, they’ve got good players, they’ve got some veterans. So, yes, this is a challenging football team that we’re going to have to play good football to win and I think that’s how it’s going to work in this conference. I do think there’s a lot of pairity. I think there’s a lot of teams that can beat anybody on a given day. I think we found a way last year to win some games in the fourth quarter because we just hung in there and continued to battle and that’s what it’s going to be. I told our team the other day, ‘this is starting a long run of games where it’s going to be four quarters of back-and-forth and if you’re not mentally and physically ready to get that done, you’re not going to win.’ So, we’ve got to be able to withstand the momentum swings and hang in there and continue to fight to the end and hope that we’re good enough to win when it’s all said and done.”

The Pick:

Louisville 31, Georgia Tech 24.
