LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – If there’s a secret to winning bowl games, Howard Schnellenberger had it. And maybe some of it rubbed off on Jeff Brohm.
The namesake for the field Louisville will play on when it faces Toledo in the Bush’s Boca Raton Bowl of Beans Tuesday at 2 p.m., Schnellenberger was 6-0 in bowl games. Brohm is 6-2 in postseason matchups, including 1-1 at Louisville.
What’s the key?
“You’ve got to be ready for anything,” Brohm said Tuesday.

Unlike a good many teams this time of year, Louisville heads into its bowl game relatively stable (swirling rumors about Brohm and Michigan’s coaching vacancy notwithstanding). A couple of starting defensive linemen have opted out. Several others are out with injuries. But a solid core will take part in Tuesday’s game.
Toledo, meanwhile, will be minus its head coach and several assistants, its starting quarterback and at least three starters from a defense that ranked No. 3 nationally in yardage allowed.
Either way, the keys in the bowl game will be the same as they were in the regular season, Brohm said.
“Don’t make a lot of mistakes,” he said. “Be locked in. Do the small things correctly and play together. To this point, I think we've practiced very well, I think even the new guys who are going to go out there and play have done a really good job. And we're optimistic that it's going to carry over to the game. So you just show up on game day, take the test and perform well. But I know our guys are ready.”
Toledo quarterback Tucker Gleason, a sixth-year player, suffered a back injury in the season-finale against Central Michigan and says he won’t play. Starting in his place will be redshirt freshman Kalieb Osborne, who saw action in six games this season, including the second half against Central Michigan, where he completed 5 of 7 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown while running for 152 yards.
He brings a more dual-threat look, and has played for Weiner since high school. Toledo also features a Kentucky transfer, Chip Trayanum, who has run for 950 yards this season. Brohm said the key for Louisville’s defense won’t change.
“Without question you've got to stop the running game, stop the quarterback run, stop the perimeter throws and the quarterback draws,” he said. “And that's the main emphasis. And with that, just don't give up big plays. Getting them out of rhythm, making them do some things they're not maybe best at, will be important. Trying to find a way to get a lead. But you never know how a game is going to evolve. You've got to be ready for everything. But right now, I think our defense has had a really good couple of weeks of practice and they're ready to go.”

Series: Louisville leads 5-3. Last meeting: A 31-6 Louisville win in Cardinal Stadium in 1981.
The Pick
Louisville 35, Toledo 17
Louisville should have too much talent, regardless of personnel situation. Toledo missing some key players only exacerbates it, as there’s likely not a ton of depth behind it.
The common opponents also tell a story: Kentucky beat Toledo 24-16, and Bowling Green beat the Rockets 28-23. Louisville beat those two teams by a combined 62 points. The 7-point line on this one is curious. Louisville should cover it easily.
