LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Louisville football will get a Florida bowl destination. The Cardinals have accepted an invitation to the Boca Raton Bowl to face Toledo of the Mid-American Conference. The game will be played on Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. in Flagler Credit Union Stadium on the campus of Florida Atlantic University.
Louisville was caught in an ACC tangle of bowls after Notre Dame declined an invitation to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
Louisville | Kentucky | Indiana | Eric Crawford
The Cards, who finished the season 8-4 after a 41-0 rout of rival Kentucky, will be looking for their second straight bowl win. And they'll be playing on Howard Schnellenberger Field. The national champion coach rejuvenated Louisville's program in the 1980s and early '90s, and built FAU's program from scratch, spending 11 years at the helm of the program before his retirement.
Toledo is 8-4, won its final four regular season games and went 6-2 in the MAC.
The game will match two of the better defenses in the country. Louisville finished the season ranked No. 16 in the nation in total defense. Toledo is No. 3.
Cardinals’ coach Jeff Brohm has built a strong record in bowl games. He’s 6-2 in his career and 1-1 at Louisville, including last year’s 35-34 win over Washington in the Sun Bowl in El Paso.
This is Louisville’s first appearance in the Boca Raton Bowl, but it won’t be Brohm’s first. He led WKU to a win in the game in 2016, a 51-31 win over Memphis.
Louisville’s health and player availability will be a concern. Its top three running backs were unavailable for Kentucky and are presumed out for the bowl game, as is top wideout Chris Bell.
Quarterback Miller Moss has not indicated his status for a bowl game.
