Trinity makes it 3 straight 6A football crowns

Rocks now have 30 state football championships all-time.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Trinity used a punishing ground game to help subdue previously unbeaten South Warren and claim a 3rd straight 6A state football title and a 30th title all-time for the school.

The Shamrocks built a three-touchdown lead at halftime and held off the Spartans 28-14 at Kroger Field Saturday in Lexington. They completed the season at 13-2, winning their last eight games. The Rocks only losses came to Cincinnati area powers Moeller and St. Xavier, both by a field goal.

Ashton Taylor got Trinity on the board with a 51-yard dash off the right side of the line less than a minute into the game. Jamaurion Berry had a 40-yard run off the left side to make it 13-0 in the second quarter.

Brennen Lowe stopped a South Warren drive with an end zone in the interception. And the Rocks then added a touchdown on Zane Johnson's 26-yard TD pass to Cross Watson just 33 seconds before halftime. The two-point conversion made it 21-0 at the break.

The Spartans didn't go away. Isaiah Briggs returned the second half kickoff 98 yards to get them within two scores. But another Berry touchdown run, this one from 29 yards out, pushed the lead back to three scores. He punished defensive back Aidan Fant on his way into the end zone. Berry earned game MVP honors after running for 78 yards and those two TD's.

After giving up a touchdown pass in the third, the Shamrock defense stiffened and closed out the victory, the 3rd in a row under head coach Jay Cobb.
