LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — It was a rivalry matchup on the hardwood Monday night during the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) 7th Regional Title game.Â
It was a packed house at Valley High School Monday night as the Trinity Shamrocks defended the 7th Regional Title from last year.Â
However, the St. X Tigers had other plans in mind.
St. X beat Trinity 59-44 to win its first regional title since 1995. The No. 1 Tigers have only lost two games this season to teams from Maryland and Texas.
The Tigers started off running when Chance Dillingham got a steal, and sprinted down the court, making the layup. Dillingham scored the first six points of the game.
Trinity cut the lead to 10 in the second half, courtesy of Garrison Gilvin, but St. X wouldn't let that last long.Â
St. X Head coach Kevin Klein was on the team in 1995 that won the regional title. The Tigers haven't won a state title since 1962, but are favored to do so this year.
"When our target gets bigger, we get better," Klein said. "And I said the only target that is bigger tonight, is our vision to get to Rupp Arena, and these guys keep coming, and I truly believe we still haven't seen their best because they keep getting better every day."
The Tigers head to Lexington to where they might face their toughest opponent yet in Great Crossing, if they get by Frederick Douglass in the 11th regional final Tuesday night.
