LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A suspect was taken into custody after turning himself in for an "accidental" fatal shooting Friday night in Louisville's Shawnee neighborhood.
Louisville Metro Police were called about 9:36 p.m. to the 600 block of South 38th Street on a reported shooting, department spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said.Â
When officers arrived, they found a man who had been shot. Police said he died at the scene.
Mitchell said the man was shot by a "known" suspect who fled the scene, but surrendered to police shortly after and is in custody.Â
The suspect was identified Saturday morning as Jared Fields, 27. Fields is charged with manslaughter. According to an arrest citation, he called 911 after the shooting while police were still on scene.Â
After his arrest, Fields told police the victim was his friend and the shooting was accidental. Police said he told them the two were talking about the handgun Fields bought. The victim was shot when Fields, "believing the handgun to be unloaded," pointed in the direction of the victim and pulled the trigger.Â
Police said a witness at the scene told them there was no argument or altercation between Fields and the victim before the shooting. They told police they had just walked to the front door of the home when he heard the gunshot and found the victim.
LMPD's Homicide Unit is investigating. Fields is being held at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.
In court Monday morning for his arraignment, a judge set his bond at $100,000.
