LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) ā If youāre just starting to get your hands in the dirt, gardening doesnāt have to be intimidating.
Wallitsch Gardens in Hikes Point is helping beginners learn the basics.
To get set up for best success, Jeff Wallitsch has the following advice:
- Prepare your soil with topsoil or compost because Kentucky dirt is heavy on clay.
- If youāre planting directly in the dirt, use in-ground soil.
- If youāre planting in containers or raised garden beds, use potting soil.
- Vegetables get their taste from the dirt, so avoid peet-based mixes.
- Feed your plants with a slow-release fertilizer so every time it rains, your garden gets a meal.
- Cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and peppers are the best plants for beginners because they produce a lot of veggies.
- Water plants in the early morning so they take in water throughout the day to avoid mold and mildew build up.
If you mess up, donāt worry about it. As with everything in life, we learn from our mistakes.
āHave fun. It's not the end of the world if something dies. That's how we learn and then you can always come to the garden center and pick up a new plant if it doesn't work out for you,ā said Wallitsch.
