Shepherdsville, Ky. (WDRB) -- Life on the farm for Robert Werkmeister is uneventful eleven months out of the year. But come December, it's holiday harvest time.
Werkmeister's Tree Farm is his seven acre back yard in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. It's home to 6,000 trees. And he says, "It's one of the few jobs that I know of where everyone is in a good mood. There is no hard sell to selling a Christmas tree because if they drive out this far, they want a Christmas tree."
The retired GE Engineer says it requires time and patience to be in this business. It takes eight years to grow a sellable product.
He grows nine different types of trees and says don't worry too much about the type, just pick the one you like the best.
"A lot of people ask for Douglas Firs. I have Douglas Firs, but that's not the tree they really want. They just know the name."
Once the perfect tree is spotted, a customer can cut it down, or it can be left up to a professional to do the dirty work.
Every tree on Werkmeister's farm is $45. He's only open three weekends a year and this is the last weekend he will be selling trees.
