Last week, we experienced record-breaking temperatures as we climbed above 100 degrees for two days in a row and ended up having the hottest day in our area in 12 years! Needless to say, we need a break from the heat.

Labor Day brought some slightly cooler air, but more importantly, drier air into our area, which did help. If you liked the temperatures on Labor Day, you're going to love what this weekend could potentially bring to our area.

Now, in order to achieve cooler temperatures, we need a shift in our weather pattern between now and the weekend. This shift will come in the form of a cold front, which also brings another chance for showers and storms.

Temperatures today, and leading up through Friday, will slowly warm up. We’ll return to the mid-80s today before climbing to around 90 degrees on Thursday and Friday.

In that timeframe, you'll notice an uptick in humidity. This increase in low-level moisture will help create an atmosphere better suited for storms along a cold front set to arrive late on Friday.

The front will push through our area on Friday night, bringing scattered showers and storms with it. While we desperately need the rain, it’s the air that follows the front that everyone will be more interested in.

Cooler air from Canada will rush in behind the front, dropping temperatures into the 50s for several mornings in a row. Even some mid to upper 40s will be possible in more rural locations, especially on Sunday and Monday mornings.

The afternoons will be just as nice! The weekend will bring temperatures that could potentially only reach the mid-70s for highs, along with low humidity and plenty of sunshine.

For comparison, high temperatures in Louisville in the mid-70s usually occur in early October. So when we say we're getting an early taste of fall, we mean it! Fall officially starts on September 22nd.
