LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Break dancing is more than just a fad in Central America. It's a lifeline for young men.
"BBoy for Life" is a documentary directed by Louisville resident Coury Deeb. It focuses on the story of gang life, break dancing and the role it plays in redemption for the youth of Guatemala.
Cast members like "Cheez" and "Gato" turned to the fast-moving, athletic dance moves to avoid gang life. Deeb says their story of faith and courage is relevant to Americans shocked by school shootings and street violence. The film, he says, focuses on what's right, what's wrong and how to support others in tough choices.
"BBoy for Life" tells about young men who have avoided becoming one of the more than 70,000 active gang members in Central America. The film follows a group of young people who find hope in a community they have formed through break dancing. The documentary is in Spanish with English subtitles, is not rated but would be considered PG-13. It premiered at the United Nations.
Several members of the cast will be in Louisville for the free "More Dance, Less Hate" event. And they'll demonstrate their incredible break dance moves and give free lessons for those who want to give it a shot.
