Carriage Ford in Clarksville, Ind., normally has 150-175 new and used cars for sale. On Wednesday, July 14, 2021, the dealership had only about 40, according to dealer-principal Marty Book.

Ford Motor Co. is weighing a novel approach to delivering new vehicles amid the global shortage of computer chips: using their dealers to finalize the manufacture of trucks and SUVs as semiconductors become available.
