LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- People will come from all over the country to experience the solar eclipse in Indiana. Even if you’re not viewing the eclipse from a spot of totality... you still need to plan ahead.

"This is a big deal to a lot of people," ISP Sgt. Carey Huls said. "A lot of people will be here."

April 8th will be a solar spectacle in Indiana. While millions have their eyes on the skies, Indiana State Police will set its sights on the roadways.

State troopers expect long traffic delays that Monday, especially in areas where the moon will completely cover the sun.

"Even some of the local small roads will be busy with people traveling through or exiting the area," Huls said.

ISP Sergeant Carey Huls expects hundred of thousands of Indiana visitors on top of the four million people who already live there.

"It's not like they're just going to Indianapolis or they're going to Bloomington," Huls said. "The path is wide."

It will be all hands on deck for ISP. Even state troopers who typically aren't in uniform, like detectives, will help with traffic and safety.

Huls said calls of people running out of gas and car crashes are more common during the eclipse.

"Don't be trying to look at the eclipse, obviously, while you're driving," Huls said. "Don't wear your eclipse glasses while you're driving down the road."

Despite the extra officers, getting help for an emergency may take a little longer.

"Everything may be slowed down," Huls said. "Don't pull off and park on the side of the road to observe the eclipse because we have to keep roadways clear for emergency vehicles."

If you don't want to end up stranded, Huls said planning ahead is key. He recommends packing snacks, a phone charger, jumper cables, eclipse glasses and your patience. He also suggests keeping an eye on the traffic map on INDOT's website.

"You may be out someplace much longer you think," Huls said.
