LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — History was on full display Monday in downtown Louisville as the city celebrated a Kentucky Derby breakthrough.
Mayor Craig Greenberg honored trainer Cherie DeVaux after she became the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby, pulling off a dramatic victory with her horse, Golden Tempo, storming from last place to first in a stunning finish.
At a ceremony inside Metro Hall, city leaders praised DeVaux’s historic win as a barrier-breaking moment for horse racing and for Louisville’s signature event.
"It feels special. It's an honor," Devaux said Monday. "I wasn't setting out to get a goal of mine on behalf of women. I'm a horse trainer, and that's what I wanted, but I do understand with that comes responsibility. I feel honored to be that person right now."
Legendary broadcaster Donna Brothers was also recognized for her longtime impact on covering the sport.
