LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Nine firefighters were honored Wednesday morning at the Kentucky Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Frankfort, Kentucky.

The annual event recognizes those who gave their lives in service to their communities in 2024.

Zoneton Fire Protection District Sgt. John Vickers, Jr. was among those remembered. His name was engraved on the memorial wall after he passed in June 2024 from a fire service–related cancer. Cancer has become a leading cause of firefighter deaths in the line of duty.

The memorial service was conducted by the Kentucky Firefighters Association, Kentucky Professional Firefighters Association, Kentucky Association of Fire Chiefs, Frankfort Fire and EMS, Franklin County Fire Department and the Kentucky Fire Commission.
