LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The federal government says the University of Kentucky violated the Civil Rights Act.

The U.S. Department of Education started an investigation in March that coincided with President Donald Trump's administration cracking down on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).

The investigation cited "race-exclusionary practices" at the university that violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by partnering with the nonprofit PhD Project. The organization aims to increase diversity in doctoral programs by providing students with insights into obtaining a Ph.D degree but limits eligibility based on race.

The university must now report all organizations it partners with to federal investigators and cancel the ones they deem problematic.

UK shut down its DEI office last year, before executive orders from the White House.
