LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A small plane crash in Indiana took the life of a well-known female pilot Wednesday morning.
Anh-Thu Nguyen, 44, was killed in the crash behind a gas station in Greenwood, just south of Indianapolis.
The crash happened around 11 a.m., shortly after takeoff from the South Greenwood Airport.
Nguyen, a Purdue University alumna, was an accomplished pilot. Last year, she became the 10th woman to fly around the world by herself.
She was also the founder of a nonprofit called Asian Women in Aerospace and Aviation.
Nguyen was the only person on board the plane when it crashed. No one on the ground was hurt.
"I cry out to God, 'Oh my God,'" Frank Williams, who witnessed the crash, told Fox59 News. "You know, there's lives at stake and you don't know how many, if it's just going to be people on the plane or what it's going to hit."
Witnesses told the news outlet they saw the plane make a series of strange aerial maneuvers, lose control and nose-dive into the ground.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are still trying to find out what happened that may have led to the crash.
