LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Bellarmine University received a $3.4 million donation to create an endowed scholarship fund aimed at helping students with financial need.

The donation — which came from a member of the university's Board of Trustees who asked to remain anonymous — is one of "the most significant individual donations to Bellarmine in recent history," according to a news release Tuesday.

"By investing in scholarships, this generous donor is expanding access for students who will go on to lives of great leadership and service," said Bellarmine's president, Susan M. Donovan.

Rooted in the university’s mission, the fund will help students from all backgrounds pursue a Bellarmine education and prepare for meaningful careers.

The donor said the money was a deferred gift from their retirement account, but they believed it would make a greater impact through scholarship.

"Prospective students might think that a Bellarmine education is unaffordable, but that’s not really the case," the donor said. "Financial support makes it possible to provide a highly personalized Bellarmine education at a cost that is in line with the price of attending a public university."

The scholarship fund will begin supporting students in the coming academic years.
