LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The winningest high school boys basketball coach in Kentucky has died.

Billy Hicks, a longtime coach at Scott County High School, died on Sunday, according to Scott County Schools. Hicks won more than 1,000 games in his career, winning two state championship and reaching the state final seven times.

"His true greatness was in the strength of his character off the court," Scott County Schools posted on Facebook. "As an educator and friend, Coach Hicks was a leader of men whose legacy and salt-of-the earth kindness will forever be cherished by Scott County Schools."

Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame said Hicks' teams set a record for state tournament wins during his coaching tenure. Hicks was inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. He retired in 2019 after coaching almost 40 seasons.

Hicks, 71, died of natural causes, reported by LEX18. He was born in Harlan County, Kentucky.
