LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two Louisville bars are now requiring people to be 30 or older to get inside.

The Palm Room on West Jefferson Street in the Russell neighborhood and The Gruv Sports Bar and Lounge on West Market Street downtown made the announcement over the weekend.

The Gruv said patrons must be 30 years and older to enter the bar after 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The policy starts Aug. 16.

The Gruv's co-owner, Dee Muldrow, said they have considered the age restriction for some time, however this weekend's triple shooting in the Highlands that killed two men and left one injured is the reason they are executing the plan, starting this weekend.

"The recent events that happened this weekend of course kind of left a bad taste in everybody's mouth," Muldrow said. "We want everyone to feel safe, to feel comfortable when they go out. Especially the older crowd."

Muldrow said there have not been issues with people younger than 30 at the bar in the past, but they want to be proactive.

"We're being very proactive to make sure our ongoing patrons can have ongoing support with us without worrying about safety," said Muldrow.

"We appreciate your understanding and continued support," the Gruv posted on Facebook about the new age restrictions.

The Palm Room is enforcing the change immediately.

"Our demographic primarily consists of individuals over the age," The Palm Room posted. "We aim to please our loyal patrons and ensure their continued enjoyment at our luxurious establishment."

General manager Tywan Young said its decision has less to do with the violence, and just enforcing a rule since it caters to an older clientele.

"We just kind of put the official stamp on it," Young said. "We already cater to that kind of crowd, we just wanted to make it official and make it known."
