LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- More jobs are coming to Bell County, Kentucky, thanks to the approval of a historic grant.

Thursday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced an $81 million federal grant that will help build the Lewis Ridge Pumped Storage Project. It will be a $1.3 billion, first-of-its-kind, coal-to-pumped storage hydropower facility.

The project, led by Rye Development, will be constructed on the former coal mine site near the Cumberland River.

Officials said it will create 1,500 construction jobs and 30 operations jobs. The facility will be able to power 67,000 homes per year.

"This is a development process that will take 7-10 years, including the building, and a project that will last, likely, for a century," RYE Development CEO Paul Jacob said.

Jacob said this project is a significant investment into eastern Kentucky.
