LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Summertime is peak season for moving, which means it is also peak season for rental scams.
Scammers advertise an apartment or home for rent, and end of stealing thousands of dollars from renters everywhere.
Toya Washington was looking for a new place to live and found an ad on Facebook Marketplace of a 2-bedroom in a newer complex.
It was for $600 a month, and she sent a $350 deposit immediately.
She even looked it up on Zillow and found the house, but it was a scam.
The house was real, but it was a copycat listing.
The FTC says to be suspicious of rental listings if:
- The landlord wants a deposit before you meet.
- You can't go inside the home.
- They ask for a deposit via Venmo, Zelle, or gift cards.
