LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- After four years of nonstop inflation, how is this possible? Frozen turkey prices are down this year and some stores are giving away free turkey once again!

Hard to believe, but Walmart has been making headlines and even grabbed President Trump's attention with frozen butterball turkeys at just 97 cents a pound.

Kroger frozen turkeys in many markets are 99 cents a pound. BJ's Wholesale Club will give you a free turkey for spending a certain amount of money just this month.

What doesn't stink is the fact that these prices don't reflect what is really going on.

The Department of Agriculture said wholesale turkey prices are really up a whopping 40% in 2025 due to ongoing bird flu and smaller flocks.

Stores are selling turkeys as "loss leaders" losing money to get you to spend more in other areas. So while grocery inflation is up 2.7% this year, Forbes Magazine says Thanksgiving dinner is down 3%, and that is worth giving thanks for.
