LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Travelers headed to the Gulf Shores, Alabama, will soon be able to fly nonstop out of Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Allegiant Airlines.

The new seasonal flights will begin May 22, according to a news release Tuesday. They will be available twice weekly on an Airbus A319 with 156 seats.

"This is great news for our community and region as we continue expanding options for travelers and we appreciate Allegiant’s on-going support of our market,” Dan Mann, executive director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority, said in a news release.

Mann said Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are popular beach destinations, so Allegiant's nonstop flights will make more convenient for travelers to experience Alabama's coast.

Approximately 40,000 overnight trips from the Louisville area to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are taken every year, according to the release.

Allegiant also provides nonstop service to other sunny destinations, including Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Myrtle Beach, Orlando Sanford, Punta Gorda, St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Sarasota and Savannah.
