LOUISVILLE, Ky. – As Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals roll out, consumer experts are warning shoppers to be cautious of pressure tactics used by some online retailers.

Many websites use pop-up alerts that claim an item is “almost sold out,” “in high demand,” or available for a “limited time.” But researchers say those messages can be misleading. A report from The New York Times highlights how notifications like “Alexandria from Anaheim just saved $222” are often fabricated to create a sense of urgency.

A study from Princeton University found hundreds of popular retail sites using similar tactics designed to push shoppers to check out faster — even when stock levels or demand aren’t as limited as they appear.

These high-pressure messages can convince shoppers to buy items they might otherwise skip. Consumer advocates say if a website claims there are only a few items left or that your cart is reserved for just a few minutes, it’s best to take a step back.

Experts recommend closing the browser and revisiting the item later if something feels off. Most deals aren’t as time-sensitive as they appear, and taking a pause can help avoid unnecessary purchases.

The bottom line: Don’t feel rushed to hit the “buy” button — unless it’s something truly time-sensitive, like a high-demand ticket release. Slowing down could help you avoid falling for misleading online sales tactics and prevent overspending this holiday season.
