Duke Energy asks state of Indiana to raise rates over the next two years

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Duke Energy customers in Indiana might see a rate increase next year.

On Thursday, April 4, Duke Energy petitioned the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission for an overall 16% rate increase in the next two years, according to the company's website. Duke is asking for an average bill increase of 12% next year and a 4% increase in 2026.

The company said this would be the first rate increase since 2020, and is needed for upgrades and expansion.

Duke Energy said since 2020, the company has invested $1.6 billion in the electric grid, power plants and the overall system to better serve its customers, preventing more than 185,000 power outages.

The proposal still needs approval from the state, and public meetings for customers to share opinions will be held. A decision on the rate increase would not happen until next year.
