LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A long-vacant piece of downtown Louisville history could soon be transformed into a hotel.

According to our partners at Louisville Business First, Louisville-based Timbawala Group wants to turn the Landmark Building, a former downtown post office on West Liberty Street, into a 150-room Canopy by Hilton hotel.

The proposed redevelopment carries a price tag of about $74 million and would include convention space inside the historic property.

The Landmark Building has been part of Louisville's skyline for generations. Originally built as the first U.S. Customs House west of the Allegheny Mountains, the property has also been home to The Courier Journal and the Louisville Chamber of Commerce.

The proposal calls for the creation of a development area that would dedicate a portion of future property tax growth from the site to help support the project over the next 20 years.

It's not yet known when construction could begin. The hotel developer hasn't announced a timeline for the conversion.

This isn't the first time the Landmark Building has been targeted for a hotel redevelopment. Similar plans have surfaced in recent years, but none have moved forward.
