LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An animal hospital in Jefferson County is celebrating 45 years in business with an expansion that nearly doubled them in size.
The Jefferson Animal Hospital on Outer Loop cut the ribbon Monday morning on a near 7,000-square-feet expansion.
The Jefferson Animal Hospital claims to be Louisville's only continuously operating animal hospital, offering 24/7 emergency care and wellness vaccines for pets. The hospital was founded in 1978 by Dr. Patricia Kennedy and her husband Rick Arrington.
According to a news release, it's one of the few animal hospitals in the country with a doctor on site every day and night if the year.
This is the second time in history that they have expanded their campus, first in 1997, and now again in 2025 from 7,694 square feet to 15,035 square feet.
The expansion includes updates to multiple areas, including medical treatment space, ICU, ultrasound, X-rays, kennels for both canines and felines, a hospital pharmacy, a blood donation center for pets, and much more.
The hospital also plans to increase their staff by 5-10% with the expansion.
āWhat we have done in Louisville is unique in Kentucky, and in the nation,ā Dr. Patricia Kennedy said in the news release on Monday. āIāve always wanted to provide the best care for pets, regardless of when the need arises. With this expansion, we can help even more families struggling with injured or sick pets.ā
The Jefferson Animal Hospital was recognized in 2021 for its efforts in one of Kentucky's most know animal abuse cases, Ethan Almighty.Ā His story would later shape animal abuse legislation in Kentucky.
