HALLOWEEN - KIDS - TRICK OR TREAT - COSTUMES - GENERIC FILE

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Halloween is still about a month away, but stores and shoppers have already gotten a head start.

According to an annual survey by the National Retail Federation (NRF), almost half of Halloween shoppers have already started buying seasonal items.

In the survey of about 8,000 consumers, 47% of consumers began their shopping before October this year, an increase from 37% in 2019. NRF said in a release Monday they forecast 2024 Halloween sales will be $11.6 billion, just shy of last year's record of $12.2 billion.

“Halloween starts the important run-up to the holiday shopping season,” Tod Griffin, president of the Kentucky Retail Federation, said in a news release Monday. “Seeing people shopping earlier continues a significant trend and could indicate an earlier start to holiday shopping, as people spread out purchases.”

NRF also predicts Americans to spend an average $104 per person on Halloween-themed items, just a few dollars short of last year's record of $108.24.

In addition, the survey found that Americans plan to spend $3.8 billion on costumes and decorations and $3.5 billion on candy. Of that $3.8 billion, $1.3 billion is expected to be spent on children's costumes, with Spider-Man, ghosts, princesses, witches and superheroes being the most popular.
