LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The iconic plane stuck in side of a hill next to a Louisville concert venue was crushed by a tree during heavy winds Wednesday afternoon.
In a post on Facebook, Headliners Music Hall on Lexington Road said its beloved plane had been hit by a falling tree.
"Welp. It's a dark day here at HDL HQ," the post read.
In a post on Reddit, an employee said they were sitting at work when they heard a crash and saw a tree had landed on the plane.
"As many of you know, the plane has been our unofficial mascot and a Louisville landmark for about as long as Headliners has been around," the post read. "While we are still in a bit of shock, we are grateful that no one was injured or property damage incurred."
The venue said it plans to salvage as much of the plane as they can, though they're not sure what form it will take.
"We know it means as much to y'all as it does to us," the Facebook post concluded. "Stay tuned for updates on what will surely be a lengthy process."
The plane was a decorative relic from the bar Cliffhangers. The owners purchased it from a southern Indiana scrap yard and used a crane to lift it up onto a support beam, tying it down with aircraft cables. The bar closed in the mid-90s, but the plane remained.
