LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It was a special day of racing at Churchill Downs as the track showed appreciation to local first responders.

First responders including police, fire and emergency medical services got into Churchill Downs for free on Sunday as a way to thank them for their services. For $29, first responders could spend the day watching the races from Millionaire's Row with a buffet, soft drinks and a race day program.

The department with the most attendees also received a trophy during a presentation in the Winner's Circle.

"I, honest to God, can't imagine what they see on a day in and day out basis," said Mary O'Wheatley, who is married to a first responder. "But to come here, thanks to Churchill Downs and enjoy this day is just a day to enjoy and show our appreciation to all of them for what they do."

The race at 4 p.m. was named "Run for Heroes" in honor of those who have served and fallen in the line of duty.
