LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) — The case of a southern Indiana man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend will move to trial after a Clark County judge rejected a proposed plea agreement Monday.
Derek Pixley is accused of shooting and killing Brittney Boman in October of 2022 in Henryville. Boman was hospitalized in Louisville for almost three months until her death on Dec. 30, 2022. In that time, Boman was never able to identify the shooter, according to family spokesperson Shawn Bostock.
The Indiana State Police Cold Case Unit took over the case from the Clark County Sheriff’s Department in Dec. 2024, and conducted numerous interviews before getting a warrant for Pixley's arrest.
According to court documents, Boman had an active protective order against Pixley at the time of the shooting. Witnesses also said Pixley made threatening comments in the days leading up to the attack.
Pixley is charged with murder. At his initial court appearance in 2025, a judge ordered him to be held without bond at the Clark County Jail. In June of this year, a plea agreement was filed.
But during Monday's hearing, Judge Nicholas Karaffa rejected the plea offer, saying the proposal "falls outside the range of what this court finds reasonable."
Boman's mother spoke before the court before Karaffa made his decision. She said plea agreements happen too frequently, and it is not in the best interest of anyone affected by domestic violence to accept the agreement.
Pixley remains held without bond and is under a no-contact order with Boman's family. His trial is set for Nov. 30.
