LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville nonprofit received a $5 million grant from a national fund.

Bezos Day 1 Families Fund donated a total of $110.5 million to 40 organizations across the U.S. to help end homelessness for families. The Coalition for the Homeless received $5 million, the nonprofit's largest private gift in its history.

According to the news release Wednesday, over the next five years, the Coalition for the Homeless plans to distribute funds to local providers to connect Louisville families experiencing homelessness with new shelter, stable housing and critical services.

Bezos Day 1 Families Fund has awarded grants for seven years.

"We are so excited about this commitment to Louisville's families and hope that it can help leverage the additional resources needed to end the family waitlist for shelter and ensure that homelessness for families with children is rare and short-lived," Natalie Harris, executive director of the Coalition for the Homeless, said in a news release.

In May, city officials said nearly 600 people are living on the street full time. Another 1,100 are living in temporary shelters.

Coalition for the Homeless will partner with nonprofits and community leaders to address homelessness. The nonprofit plans to coordinate best-practice solutions with partners to address homelessness among families including shelters, case management and permanent housing.

"For us, we always need more resources and this is going to change so many lives," said Brian U'Sellis, the development director. "Every Friday when we get the family waitlist, it's the worst part of our week and knowing that this money is going to be available over five years really helps those in need. It's an incredible feeling."
