CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) — A now former southern Indiana teacher is being called a predator, accused of inappropriate contact with a young female student.
The teacher resigned in April. But now, nearly seven months later, a civil lawsuit is revealing details about the messages he sent to an eighth grader.
The lawsuit names the teacher, the principal, and a counselor at Clarksville Community Schools. It claims the Clarksville Middle and High school teacher used his official school email and Instagram accounts, as well as his private accounts, to communicate with a female student.
According to the lawsuit, the teacher manipulated the student into sending him explicit and inappropriate pictures and audio recordings of herself from October 2023 through April of this year.
WDRB News is not naming the teacher because at this point he has not been charged with a crime, but is under investigation.
"It's really caused this young child a lot of traumatic distress and emotional distress. She's had to go through counseling for this. She's a young girl, 13, eighth grader, and so to be subjected to a teacher's predatory activities, which we think that the school had notice or should have known and failed to take action soon enough," Karl Truman, the attorney representing the family, said. "I've got a daughter who is an adult now, but at the time, when she was this age, to think my daughter having gone through something like this, it's very upsetting."
The lawsuit said the principal and counselor had reason to believe the student was a victim of abuse by February or March.
Clarksville's police chief said they started their criminal investigation into the teacher back in April, and that the investigation is taking a long time because investigators are gathering all necessary Instagram records.
Clarksville Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Tina Bennett said in April the teacher resigned after allegations were reported.
The school district said Tuesday it doesn't comment on pending litigation.
