During the struggle, two officers were shot. Both were taken to UofL Health  Hospital in downtown Louisville, where McKinley said they are stable. LMPD later confirmed one officer was shot in the hand, and the other was shot in the leg. McKinley said their injuries are not life-threatening.

A suspect was also shot during the struggle, and taken to Jewish Hospital and later arrested McKinley said. The suspect was identified as 19-year-old Jeremiah Thompson.

LMPD said in a social media post around 8:30 p.m. that the scene was in the 400 block of Roselane Street, which is between South Preston and South Jackson streets, and asked the public to stay away from the area.

The investigation is in its preliminary stages, and police are expected to provide updates on Wednesday. LMPD's Public Integrity Unit is handling the investigation.

McKinley said that while the incident is a fluid situation, police believe all suspects are accounted for and there is no threat to the public.

"This underscores the dangers of proactive police work, and the work that our men and women of LMPD do every day to keep our community safe, and we are grateful for them," McKinley said during a press briefing outside UofL Hospital just after 10 p.m. Tuesday. "We are also extremely grateful that there were no other injuries from this incident, and that those who did sustain injuries have non-life-threatening injuries."

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, who also spoke at the briefing, said he and McKinley had just visited the officers, who he said are "fortunately, in good spirits and on the road to recovery."

"I want to give a giant thanks to both officers and everyone on LMPD who goes above and beyond every day to work to keep all of us safe throughout the entire community," Greenberg said. "I also want to thank all of the team at UofL Hospital, who has once again done tremendous work to help individuals who need, and in this case to provide great medical care and treatment to two LMPD officers who sustained gunshot wounds."
