NEW WASHINGTON, Ind. (WDRB) — One person is dead and another is recovering after a shooting at a bar in southern Indiana late Wednesday night.
It happened at Sweathogs Bar and Grill around 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 20, according to the Clark County Sheriff's Office.
When officers arrived, they found a man "who had succumbed to a gunshot wound" as well as a woman with a gunshot wound, according to a statement. The man died at the scene, and the woman is receiving medical attention. There have been no updates on her condition.
Butch Adams said he's owned Sweathogs for years, but has never experienced anything like what happened late Wednesday at his bar in New Washington.
According to the Clark County Coroner's Office, 36-year-old Alvin Huttsell died in the shooting. The owner of Sweathogs, Butch Adams, said the man was a regular customer.
"The ones that are regulars get to be more than customers, they're friends, they're neighbors. Your lives become intertwined some way, shape, or form. It's a small community, so when something like that happens, it's very devastating," Adams said.
Adams said he was still inside Wednesday night when things unfolded quickly in the parking lot.
"There was no chaos," he said. "I just heard some pop, pop, pops. Then I met my manager out back as well and she was coming around going, 'Oh my gosh! You're not going to believe what just happened.'"
A post on the bar's Facebook page called the incident a "tragic event."
Images from the scene showed more than dozen evidence markers in the parking lot Wednesday night.
Sweathogs opened at its normal time of 11 a.m. Thursday, although Adams said it was a somber day and many were still in disbelief.
"... at this time of the year when everybody's having family get-togethers, there's going to be one family that's missing one," he said.
The Clark County Sheriff's Office said a man was taken into custody and questioned, but later released after investigators consulted with the prosecutor's office.
The sheriff's office said there is no current threat to the public, and it appears "the individuals involved may have known each other and this incident was isolated."
Clark County Sheriff Scottie Maples said in an update on Facebook Thursday evening that video surveillance footage shows a man exit the bar and get into his vehicle. Shortly after, Maples said, a woman exits the bar and gets into a car with another man who was already in a vehicle in the parking lot waiting for her. Maples said the man never entered the bar.
The man and the woman attempt to leave the bar in the vehicle when the other man gets out of his car and walks toward them, Maples said. That's when a verbal altercation started on the driver's side of the vehicle.
Maples said the video shows an exchange of gunfire from both of the men. The man who approached the vehicle died from his injuries at the scene and was later identified as Huttsell. Maples said the man in the vehicle suffered a graze wound, but the woman in the passenger seat was hit several times. Police believe her wounds were caused by shots from Huttsell's firearm.
The man in the vehicle then called 911 to report the shooting. Once on scene, police took the man in for questioning and he was later released.
Maples said the investigation will be sent to the Clark County Prosecutor for review.
Indiana State Police investigators are assisting in the investigation.
The victim was 36-year-old Alvin Huttsell.
