LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police are investigating after a woman was shot and a man was grazed in a shooting near an elementary school in the city's Russell neighborhood around dismissal time Wednesday afternoon.
John Bradley, a spokesperson for LMPD, said the shooting was reported just before 3:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of West Chestnut Street. That's near Coleridge-Taylor Montessori Elementary School and Central High School.
Once on scene, officers determined the shooting had happened in the area of the 1100 block of Place Blanc, at the City View Park apartments, where they found a woman who had been shot and a man with a graze wound, Bradley said.
At the scene, LMPD Maj. Bryan Edelen told reporters responding officers "applied tactical trauma care" for the woman that "saved the victim's life." Both victims were transported to University of Louisville Hospital and are expected to survive their injuries.
LMPD's Non-Fatal Shooting Unit is handling the investigation.
Edelen said school staff reported the shooting after hearing gunfire. Jefferson County Public Schools implemented security protocols and changed pickup locations for afternoon dismissal.
Former Kentucky representative Charles Booker was picking up his daughters when the shooting happened, he wrote in a post on Facebook.
"We all started scrambling, swerving around, trying to speed to get out of here. You know, we were caught in a traffic jam trying to get out and all I could think is we're sitting ducks," Booker told WDRB. "... To experience it like this, leaving school while our children are still outside is just something I can't wrap my mind around and our children deserve better."
The shooting and scene left a number of students and parents shaken up.
"I was literally right here, about 10 feet from this spot, leaving the parking lot here at Coleridge-Taylor picking up my preschooler and my third grader and I heard the noise. And I have heard a lot of gunshots, and I didn't want to believe that's what I was hearing," Booker said. "So I just asked my daughters 'what are you all doing back there?' And it got louder, and I realized what was happening. Survival mode kicked in, and I'm still numb."
LMPD said there was no active aggressor. While there are no known suspects, Edelen said investigators believe they know the parties involved.
