LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 25-year-old woman died after being shot in New Albany, Indiana, early Saturday morning.

New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey said officers responded on a reported shooting at 5 a.m. in the 130 block of Village Drive.

Joshua Thompson, 25, of New Albany has been charged with murder in relation to the shooting. Thompson's mugshot wasn't immediately made available.

According to Bailey, Lee and Thompson had a preexisting relationship.

A neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, lived near Lee said she watched the shooting unfold.

"We heard a man screaming, the police pulled in," she said. "They ran into the person's apartment. The man was screaming that a woman was shot."

She said Lee was a mother of three children.

"For them to not have a mom anymore," she said. "Domestic violence is just so real. It's just a tragedy. She was trying to flee from this man."

The neighbor believes Lee recently moved in with a friend at the location on Village Drive to get away from Thompson.

"My dad and her grandpa are really good friends, it's such a tragedy to witness all of this," she said.

The case remains under investigation.

Lee's family has created a GoFundMe to cover the cost of her funeral and support her children. To donate, click here.
